This summer in downtown Brooklyn, something exciting is happening. The Dekalb Market, housed in a collection of repurposed shipping containers, will open in the Fulton Mall. Creative entrepreneurs will be brought together at this destination that will include an incubator farm, food market, and a collection of eateries and work-sell spaces, not to mention events and a performance venue. As if that weren’t exciting enough, Urban Space is presenting the Not Just a Container contest — a competition to come up with the most creative and innovative use for a shipping container.
The idea is to have designers and entrepreneurs completely re-imagine a use for a recycled shipping container and then bring that idea to life at this downtown retail location. In doing so, this project will help support the growth of Brooklyn’s creative community and foster local innovative sustainable design.

Although only U.S. residents are eligible to enter, shipping container-based structures have been popping up all around the world.
