NEW YORK—Specialty foods, handmade soaps and candles, and jewelry boutiques were on display at the Dekalb Market 2012 Spring Weekender launch event Saturday and Sunday. About one square block in Downtown Brooklyn, the Dekalb Market is a community market encircled by shops made out of salvaged shipping containers.

“We’ve got a lot of really good, exciting energy,” said Joann Kim-Nunez, one of the event producers. On any given weekday, shoppers can find 40 retail and 20 food shops, and different popup shops on the weekends.

“It’s an outdoor multisensorial experience. We’ve got food, retail shopping, eating, drinking, live music, [and] dance. It’s really an all around experience and you can look forward to that seven days a week this year,” Kim-Nunez said.

Many of the shops new to Dekalb Market decided to start off small on Sunday and expect to be around all summer. Pan Latin started with a limited selection including guava cream cheese bread pudding. Kalabash, a culinary mentorship, participated to give students some hands-on experience.

Other shops set up on Saturday, the first day of the launch event, and have already gotten great responses.

“We sold out yesterday. There’s lots of kids, lots of families, it’s very nice,” said Simon Tung from Macaron Parlor.

From live concerts to petting zoos, the market aims to have something for all ages, such as the Easter egg hunt for kids at the Spring Weekender launch.

The Dekalb Farm, a collaborative urban agriculture community project, also participated in classes and workshops arranged for both adults and children to teach cooking, farming, gardening, and crafting.

“This year we’re very event based. There’s a lot of programming, a lot of music, night markets, a petting zoo, things you wouldn’t normally expect in a market,” Kim-Nunez said.

Dance parties will be organized every Sunday afternoon, and live concerts both free and ticketed will take place weekly. Next weekend will feature robot activities all Saturday to celebrate National Robotics Week, and discounted beer and mimosas for Tax Day on Sunday. Dekalb Market is also planning monthly events like bike-in movie nights, a Twilight Market, and roller derbies hosted by Down & Derby.
