Dekalb Market

As previously mentioned, we finally recieved our permits! After waiting for over a year, we haven’t been more ready to get this thing going. Containers are being delivered and are being fitted out as we speak. Our salvaged shipping containers are a beauty! See Exhibit A.

First up on site are the retail units. Our peeps at Pratt, Kudu-lah, Yakblak, B66, Harriets Alter Ego, 3rd Ward, Brooklyn Rock, Hank and Jojo, Daga Antiques, Brooklyn Bodega, and Little Poco (more to announce soon!) are ready with hammer and hard hat in hand. From puppet shows to  live hand screenings, these vendors are not only selling they are entertaining too.

This weekend marks the opening of flea market season - a sure sign of spring just when we need one. Even better, Brooklyn is getting two new offerings.

In addition to the well-established Brooklyn Flea on Saturdays in Fort Greene, a location will open Sundays in Williamsburg, boasting East River views.

Meanwhile, in downtown Brooklyn, an empty lot on the Flatbush Avenue Extension is transforming into Dekalb Market. A collection of refurbished shipping containers will house boutique shopping, eclectic eats and even a live performance venue and a farm.

There are lots of great markets growing and thriving in Brooklyn these days, and one of the most exciting ones is the coming Dekalb Market, soon to be a home to artisans, farmers, food innovators, and chickens.

I was incredulous as I walked along Flatbush Avenue towards the market site last December. I spent a semester studying at Long Island University (LIU) Brooklyn Campus as an undergraduate, and I could hardly imagine a market, let alone a farm, right across the street.

I squeezed through the fence to meet up with Eldon Scott, head of Urban Space NYC, the organization behind the Dekalb Market, as well as the Union Square and Columbus Circle Holiday Markets and the Madison Square Market.  As we stood on the empty, frozen site, Eldon shared with me the plans for the market, which, if you look at the image from that day, was a testament to his vision.

We’ve been remiss in not reporting on one of our favorite food-market projects to hit this city in years, one of those Big Ideas like Brooklyn Flea or New Amsterdam Market. That’s Dekalb Market, which is headed to the downtown Fulton Mall on the old Albee Square mall spot in downtown Brooklyn this summer. It’s a joint project from Urban Space (they run all those outdoor holiday markets, like one next to the Greenmarket in Union Square) and the real estate development company Youngwoo & Associates.
