It seems like a pretty straight forward concept. If you want to make the most kick ass fro yo, you need to start with actual quality yogurt. This, in sum, is exactly what Culture – An American Yogurt Company, does; House -made yogurt cultures, organic milk, freeze, add toppings, serve.
Well ok, it’s not quite that simple. Jenny and Gino Ammirati, owners of Culture, start by making their own yogurt, which they also sell, using the following live probiotic cultures:
Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilus, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium lactis.
The milk comes from Hudson Valley Fresh, 100% real milk from cows not treated with rBST (i.e. hormones), double pasteurized.
So yeah…this is basically science.
What’s important for us laymen is that this yogurt is absolutely fresh as can be, no chemicals or additives, powders or pectin. At the end of the day, it really is just milk and Greek-style yogurt, frozen. Some mention also, should be given to the toppings, seasonal and local, all made in house as well. The toppings mean that you can make this frozen treat as healthy or desert-y as you’d like. Have it plain with a little honey, or go totally nuts with chocolate sauce and oreo cookie. There’s also fresh fruit of course, and even a key lime topping!
For my inaugural taste, I was looking for something on the lighter side, so I went with a cup of the classic, topped with graham crumbs. Tart, creamy and delicious, it’s frozen yogurt that actually still tastes like yogurt! This ain’t dippin’dots folks.
